Five Steps to Silverfish Bug killing

Five Steps to Silverfish Bug killing

You can get rid of them, but it's a tricky process because these creatures have a very long lifespan for an insect - up to 2 or even 3 years. And they breed like rabbits, planting their eggs in hard-to-find nooks and crannies around your home.

Silverfish bugs are small, silvery, scaly little insects which wriggle around your home, looking alternatively for food and dark spots to hide and breed in. They are distinctly unpleasant, hard to kill and embarrassing when you have guests around! No one wants a silverfish bug to crawl out under your visitor's shoe.

So make sure you plan your silverfish eradication well. It's best to research these little creatures properly with the various guides and silverfish info resources around the internet. Understand your enemy!

Because of this if you just go out and kill them with poisons, you are very likely to see them cropping up again a few weeks later. This is because you didn't catch all the eggs hidden away, your home is still a god habitat for them, and they can still come in from the outside through whichever route they were previously using.

Here is an overview of the five steps you must take to successfully rid your home of silverfish bugs:

Step 1: remove the food sources

Silverfish only like certain types of food. But unfortunately the range is quite wide, and can be found in more places than just the kitchen. They love to eat the starch that can be found in many kitchen ingredients, but also in the glue of book bindings, for example.

You want to make it as difficult as possible for them to access food of any kind.

Step 2: find the hot spots

You can use various methods to find out where the silverfish are gathering at night in your home. Laying out sticky traps is one technique. And checking out their most common locations, as mentioned above.

Step 3: Find the entrance

Silverfish are naturally found outdoors in the wild. They only come into your home with a way in. So find the entrance and seal it up.

Step 4: lay the poison

Now you've found them, cut off their escape and entrance route, and made it very hard for new hatchlings to survive through a lack of food. You can use many different types of poison to kill them, some are more toxic than others, so choose carefully. And you can also opt for traps of various sorts if you prefer, all available in your local DIY store.

Step 5: Make your home inhospitable to silverfish

Silverfish love moistness, dampness, dirt and warmth. So you need to clean up your home and try to remove these conditions. There are some key areas where silverfish infestations tend to build up, such as in the basement, behind the fridge or kitchen cupboards. In the laundry room and a few other common places. Fill in cracks in the floor boards and walls.

If you want to know if any silverfish have been crawling around your dishes or cutlery at night while you sleep, set up a silverfish trap.
